When Jem, a young poacher, is convicted of killing a gamekeeper and transported to Van Diemen’s Land in 1842, he leaves behind Ella, the girl he loves. Pregnant and penniless, and trapped in a loveless marriage, Ella sacrifices all so her unborn child will know its father. While Ella tries every means to follow Jem across the world, he is planning his escape to return home.
